Silver Sparkles

I was a bit disheartened when a friend recently showed up with her hair dyed in a monotone, off black color to cover her silver hair. My first impression was that this color, which was too dark for her complexion, over-shadowed her sparkle. If you didn’t know, let me be the first to tell you, Silver Hair Sparkles!!!

But of course, every woman has the right to wear her hair the way she prefers. Many women believe that dying their hair will make them look younger. As a beauty expert who can’t help but notice a woman’s appearance, I have always countered that covering up your silver hair, doesn’t necessarily make you look younger; done improperly, it can actually create the opposite of what is actually desired.

And speaking of young, the young girls are stripping their dark hair and dying it silver these days; that’s the trend. Silver is the new black!!! And I’ve recently heard a couple of podcasts about white women getting on the natural hair bandwagon. Natural hair for them means being liberated from covering up their silver hair.  And doesn’t silver sound more appealing than gray?

If you prefer covering your silver hair, here are a few tips so that your hair doesn’t scream, “I’ve just dyed my hair to cover the gray.”   As we grow older, silver hair or lighter hair, softens the aging of our faces. So follow these tips.

Tip 1 – Use a color that is at least a shade or two lighter than your natural color. Whatever you do, don’t use black, which will give you a harsh look and will wash out your natural complexion, reflecting a dull hue in your skin tone.

Tip 2 – See a professional colorist who will know how to match your skin tone and offer you an array of hair colors to choose from. And though it may cost a little more, having highlights and low-lights will really give your hair more of a natural look, emulating the way natural hair color appears in varying shades. At Khamit Kinks Professional Colorist Taeisha Black is stellar at coloring hair. Book a consultation with her to discuss your options.

Tip 3 – Following your hair color process, make sure to have a deep conditioning treatment as hair coloring by its nature is very drying and strips the hair of its natural oils. You want to replace these oils by having hot oil treatments and  great conditioning treatment.

Tip 4 – And for those who are wearing your silver hair, use silver boosters to enhance and help your silver sparkle.

Healing and Being Flower Fresh

The great Zen Master, Thich Nhat Hanh says, “We should be flower fresh, so that we refresh others.” When visiting with my mother in the hospital over the last few months that was my intention, to be flower fresh, not only for my mother, but all those who attended to her. A hospital is definitely a place that needs the energy of flower freshness. I wanted to be flower fresh to help my mom get better, but I also I had with me, something more.

I brought to the hospital an Anu Essentials Refresh Spritzer and I would spray it a few times throughout each day. This not only changed the aroma and molecules of my mother’s hospital room, but it had an affect on everyone who entered her room. From the visitors to the nurses and the nurse’s aids and doctors, they all noticed the shift in energy and aroma when entering my mom’s room.

Typically they would all take a deep breath and say, “Something in here smells good, what is that?” They also allowed me to lightly shower their faces with the Spritzer. They would happily follow my directions to softly close their eyes, inhaled slowly and deeply as I gently sprayed them with the Spritzer. And my mom was happy that I had an extra Spritzer to leave with her, so that she could spray it whenever I was not there to address any unpleasant smells.

As I have mentioned before, my mother has been in and out of hospitals all her life and even as a child, the one thing that always weighed heavily on me when visiting her at the hospital, was the ever-present hospital smell. Let’s be honest, it smells of pain, illness, and even death, which is something that affects not only those staying there, but also those working and visiting there.

Since I have such a keen sense of smell, I find the aromas of a hospital draining on my spirit. Therefore, I was relieved and felt armed with nature, to have my creation in my bag to help me through the many hours spent at the hospital.  It made it all, so much more bearable. After finally leaving the hospital, the first rehab center that my mom was transferred to was so dank, in addition to the Spritzer; I had to bring out the heavy aroma arsenal. Stay tuned for that story next week.

Burdened with a number of respiratory illnesses, commercial perfumes and other artificial fragrances can set my mother off to coughing, choking and wheezing, which made it impossible for her to continue to go to church. The amount of heavily perfumed members of the congregation would trigger an asthma attack. That is never the case when I spray our plant based perfumes or Spritzers around her. I was so happy to have in created botanical based aroma Spritzers, something that’s easily accessible that I could use to uplift, inspire and shift the energy of my mother and her hospital room. It also helped to inspire me through the long hours.

Formulated with herbs and essential oils it brought nature into the space, God’s pharmacy, is what plants are. They are naturally imbued with healing elements. So if you need to change the energy in a space, whether it’s your home, car, office, or even a public place such as an airplane or hospital room, remember the healing and renewing elements of Anu Essentials Refresh and Spiritual Spritzers. Our Spritzers make it easy for you to be ‘flower fresh.”

I would be remiss if I didn’t share that as a woman of a certain age, experiencing the power of heat rising aka menopausal symptoms, spritzing my face with these herbal Spritzers calms the sweating and leaves me with a feeling of freshness.  Try it! I guarantee you’ll enjoy the experience.

How To Make Your Hair Pop or Bounce!

Recently I’ve been receiving compliments on my hair from the most unexpected people. What’s the difference? I believe the warm seasons may have something to do with it. People are most apt to stop and take notice of things when it’s warm outside, things they could care less about when it’s cold. But the truth of the matter is, all year long, I’m consistent with my hair rituals and doing what is best for my hair. It’s causes my hair to pop and shine in every season. Below are the hair rituals that I live by.

First things first, hair cuts!  I keep to a strict schedule of getting my hair trimmed/cut every 8-12 weeks. This adds such vibrancy to the hair. With only healthy hair on your head, your hair is sure to bounce if it’s long and pop if it’s short.

Often when wearing short hair, it’s often assumed you do nothing to enhance your hair. This couldn’t be further from the  truth! When your hair is short like mine, friends and strangers alike may not realize that you’ve had a trim, they have no idea what’s giving your hair so much life. This is equally true of short natural hair, when you receive a real haircut, your hair will not only be more vibrant, it will also look an feel more lively and vibrant.

The second thing that I am diligent about is hydration. I make sure my hair experiences water everyday. I do this by allowing my hair to get wet when showering. When showering, my hair doesn’t get soaked (unless I intend to shampoo it) but it is lightly exposed to the water. If I’m taking a bath and not showering, then I hydrate by using a spray bottle to lightly spritz my hair.

The hydration that occurs from wetting the hair (and while it is still damp) makes it easier for any product to perform better on your hair, whether its an oil, cream or gel; it will allow the product to go beyond the surface of the hair and penetrate into the deeper levels. On a weekly basis I use our Luscious Curling Cream. Ahhh Curling Cream, it is to hair what butter is to a cake. It creates moistness, richness and shine. After shampoo and conditioning, applying Curling Cream is  a must. I love the way it defines my texture and my natural curl pattern. I shingle it through out my hair, and this causes my hair feel richer, thicker and more radiant.

For daily basis maintenance, I use our Leave-In-Conditioner. While it’s great to wet your hair on a daily basis to keep it hydrated, the water naturally evaporates. Using a Leave-In-Conditioner (especially one that is cream based) helps to extend the hydration throughout the day. But much like brushing your teeth, a Leave-In-Conditioner has to be applied daily.  The Leave-In- Conditioner is not needed on the same day that you apply the Curling Cream. Because the Curling Cream is rich and a little heavy, once a week application is sufficient.  Then use the Leave In Conditioner the following days to reactivate and daily hydrate.

I have always believed that one of the most attractive features of any hairstyle is a healthy hairline. I am a fierce protector of my hairline. Years of all kinds of braids, twists, Locs styles and extensions, and I have never lost any of the hair around my hairline. At Khamit Kinks, we are stickers about protecting our client’s hair. And if the hairline is healthy, it’s an indication, that the rest of the hair is strong and healthy.

One of my grooming practices I’ve never shared this publicly or privately is that… I groom my hairline! As a child coming up in the south, we called it taking care of your “baby hair” (showing my age here). Haha! Yes, I’ve been grooming my baby hair since I started doing my own hair as a tween; today it’s called edge control.  But back in the day, in High School, I would use the thick and pasty Nu-Nile. But today I use the light and gentle Soft Set Gel, to give my hairline a lovely, naturally framed look, by smoothing down the hair that frames my face, my baby hair. It’s subtle but it adds that extra something! I’m not trying to be like FKA twigs, you know, just a little something, something. Using natural, botanical based products with essential oils and vitamins that feed that hair is what we offer in our products.

That’s it! Those are my tricks to make short hair pop and shine and long hair bounce.  You too can receive plenty of compliments on your hair by following these rituals.

  1. Regular haircuts
  2. Lubricating the hair and scalp with natural oils
  3. Moisturizing with Curling Cream
  4. Hydrating with a Leave-In-Conditioner
  5. Using a Soft Set Get to hold the hairline or for any soft hold of the hair.

The Hypnotic Linden Blossom

Just as the Summer Solstice began so did the gorgeous blossoming of the linden blossom tree and its intoxicating fragrance. Right next to my house stands a huge linden blossom tree and every summer it perfumes the entire block with its hypnotic honey and floral aroma. From the time you enter the block, you can’t help but notice it. It permeates the air giving one a feeling of having been transported somewhere far away, open and beautiful. But here it stands on this city block a gift to all who are within a sniffing radius.  The down side is, the fragrance only lasts a week or so.

Linden Blossom oil is a bespoke essence that is used in perfumery and high end beauty products. It is said to beautify the skin in the same way that rose oil does. The scent profile is soft and mild as an essential oil, much lighter than the aroma it emits from the tree. For a novice and professionals alike it may be difficult to distinguish linden blossom in a perfume, but it adds its own subtle beauty to any fragrance.

The aroma is so intoxicatingly beautiful, that I had to grab my step stool, my pruner and cut a branch and bring it in my home. To my delight the fragrance continued to perfume the air in my home for several days.  It’s so difficult for me to be in the gym when it’s beautiful outside so I began walking in Prospect Park again.  There are several linden blossom trees that are blooming on the walking, running,  biking route.  Each time I reached one, I had to just stop, inhale deeply, exhale, and repeat. I will be a launching a perfume this fall with linden blossom. So inhale deeply and stay tuned.

Stop And Smell The Roses

Although we’re in the Summer Solstice, I didn’t want to let June pass by without reminding you that June is the official month of the rose. Roses are the flower that represents some of the ways love manifests in our lives; red for passion, all the variations of pink and orange for friendship, yellow for sensual and or deep abiding love (no wonder roses for February 14th.) White roses are for austerities, acknowledgment of a recently deceased for funeral or, for your ancestor shrine.

Queen of all the flowers, the oil of roses, their homeopathic use and or the of smell real rose, assists in healing the heart. Real rose oil is used in luxury facial creams, because rose heals and beautifies the skin.  This is why we use rose oil in all of our Sultry line of beauty products, our Body Butter, Body Polish and Soap all have real rose oil.

In perfumery “rose oil plays well with all the other oils” said Mandy Aftel ~ softening, sweetening and rounding out the sharp edges of any fragrance.

All of Anu Essentials Perfumes have the highest quality rose oils from Bulgaria. Our Sita Perfume has the most rose oil of all our perfumes. As Thích Nhât Hanh reminds us, “Be flower fresh”. Rose is the flower of Oshun, Het Heru, Aphrodite.  If you haven’t already, on your way to your next appointment, stop and smell the roses.  And if you can, visit the botanic garden of your choice to check out the many variety of rose offerings.
